Skaven: Back to Warhammer Fantasy

After a fairly long break of painting anything from Warhammer fantasy, caused by the need to get some practice painting 40k I've gone back in time and thanks to a friend have got the new skaven hero model from the Island of blood box set (he has 4 of these guys). The last thing from fantasy I painted was a high elf mage so its quite the difference. From clean and fancy to rusty and rotten; should be fun!

I'll be updating the painting of this model as I go, so keep checking back to see more. I'll also add how I painted the different steps on the tutorials blog. Hereis my progress so far, doesnt look that pretty basecoated in all its glory, hopefully it will improve somewhat.

Chaos Dreadnough Conversion

Recently got a commission to paint this fantastic dreadnought conversion, that has so much going on its hard to no where to look. My client wanted a me to create the look that this is an ultramarine dread being taken over by chaos. easy enough if it was an ultramarine dread, but no it was a chaos dread, so chaos thats ultramarine taken over by chaos. Well in any case this is the result of the project.

As you can see the legs are very heavily converted, and could probably look a bit better, expecially leading up to the torso, so it was hard to paint effectively around that area. Using green stuff I added the fleshy areas to the model. The problem with making it look truly ultramarine is the huge amount of chaos iconography/skulls on the model. The client was very happy with the final result though and thats all that really matters.

Currently....

At the present I'm doing a bit of commission work hence the few updates, I've been given a very interesting challenge of painting a chaos dreadnought to look like an ultramarine dreadnought, being taken over by chaos... Interesting isn't it! I'm finding it to be quite the challenge, as it has to not end up looking like a thousands sons model. Hopefully it will be finished in 2 days and then I'll have some pictures up.

On another note I have added another tutorial to my sister blog about how to paint some good looking ork skin GO HAVE A LOOK.

Once I've finished this current commission work I will then be finishing of a tutorial that I'm doing on painting ork weaponry (rust, chipping etc.) Ive done a test and I'm very happy with how it came out and can't wait to share the results.

St. Celestine

Bought this model on ebay for a few pennies half assembled and mostly spray painted black, it also came with the larger base attached that seems to be sculpted using a bit modrock or something similar, but once I'd put some paint on it actaully looked really good. I used quite a lot of washes on the armour of this model to get the red hues, which I think came out really well. Do wish my abilities at taking photos would improve though, as they really dont do the model justice.

Astorath the Grim

This was a great model to paint and was my first go at doing a model in mostly reds, so I'm very happy with how this guy turned out. The images dont really show the highlighting that I've done on the red portions, so you'll just have to trust me, he looks good, especially next to the sanguinor. I'll be putting him up or auction on eBay soon. Enjoy!

The Sanguinor, Exemplar of the Host

Well on my current painting spree I could'nt help but have a go painting The Sanguinor; a model I've always wanted to have a go with. I decided to paint it as similar to the scheme shown on the games workshop website, but probably a bit quicker than they did, took me about 2 days I'd say which I think is quite quick considering its all NMM. I'm very happy with the results especially the sword which i've never painted this way before. If I had another go I would probably make the golds a bit brighter, with a more extreme highlight, and maybe spend a bit more time on the wings. I've also made a tutorial on how I painted this model which I'll be adding to the Novas tutorials blog soon, so please have a look, any feedback would be appreciated.

This model Is also on eBay so if your interested please have a look at The Sanguinor

Canis Wolfborn

Following on from my previous space wolves army I thought I'd have a go on a good old space wolves hero and who better than Canis Wolfborn. I painted him in a similar style to the previous SW's that I did, but used NMM techniques on the gold and silvers. The model is currently up for ebay, please have a look at Canis Wolfborn
